Jeju, although not a very big island, is blessed with spectacular terrain, majestic peaks, lava caves and numerous waterfalls. Most of the waterfalls are located in the southern part of the island near to Seogwipo. One of the most scenic is Jeongbang Falls (정방폭포). The other two popular waterfalls, also in the same area, are Cheonjiyeon Falls and Cheonjeyeon Falls. They sound similar but they are actually two different waterfalls. All three waterfalls are near enough to each other so they can be covered in a day.
At 23 m (75 ft) high the Jeongbang Waterfall is the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly in the ocean. The source of the waterfall is the Donghong-chun stream which splits into two paths that pour over into the sea. Although you can see it from a high vantage point, to better appreciate the force of water from the falls you will need to get close to it. Go down the flight of steps after the ticket payment booth. It will lead you to the falls.
Wear a good pair of shoes because the large and sometimes wet rocks around the waterfall do require nimble and sure footing if you want to get close to the splash for the “I was here” photo moment.
Take your time to enjoy this majestic fall and if you are not queasy about creepy crawlies there are Korean Haenyeo (women divers) selling freshly caught live shellfish and sea cucumbers. They will slice up a mixture of morsels for you on the spot for 20,000 won (about USD 18). Being a shellfish person I must say they are heavenly to my palette especially when downed with a bottle of soju (distilled rice liquor).
