Jeju is an island just off the Southern coast of South Korea. It is a very popular tourist destination not only for Koreans but for visitors all over the world charmed by its scenic coasts. The number of tourists from China is growing at such frenetic pace that most major establishments have Chinese speaking staff.
With over 10 million tourists from mainland Korea, China and Japan, Jeju is served by about 100 flights a day. Most of the flights originate from Gimpo (GMP) domestic airport in Seoul with a short flight time of about one hour.
I had the opportunity to fly Eastar Jet from Seoul to Jeju on my recent trip which I must say was a pleasant experience. Eastar Jet is one of the many low cost carriers serving Jeju International Airport using a fleet of B737-700s.
Book Online
After comparing several options like Jeju Air, Air Busan and Asiana I found that Eastar offered the best prices and had the morning flight times that I preferred. I booked online 2 months ahead of my travel through the Eastar website which automatically defaulted to English when you are booking from overseas. They offer discounts if you are a member so it is best to register before making a booking. The booking process is straightforward and took no more than 15 mins. The cost for a 2-way return ticket came to 161,200 KRW (USD 120). This includes airport tax, fuel surcharge and 15Kg check-in baggage allowance. Remember to print out the booking confirmation, or at least save a copy of the booking confirmation email on your smartphone. Ticket prices do vary quite alot and sell out nearer the date so do book early. Avoid peak periods like summer months and weekends if you want to enjoy cheaper fares.
Below is a snippet of my booking confirmation showing the return fare for one pax:
Checking In at Gimpo Domestic Airport
Gimpo is a busy airport servicing many airlines. Although this is a domestic flight I suggest arriving at the airport at least an hour before the scheduled time of flight. Look for the red logo of the Eastar Jet counter towards the right side of the check-in counters.
The passenger service staff at the counter spoke English and information on seat selection, aircraft type and boarding gate was conveyed clearly.
Eastar Jet Cabin
The one-hour flight was typical budget carrier style, ie one round of non-alcoholic drink and a packet of peanuts served by a 3 member crew.
The overall experience on Eastar was pleasant. It can be summed up as a good no fuss, no frills airline with fast, efficient service right from the time I did the booking online.
