Dormy Inn Matsumoto

Matsumoto was our first stop en-route to Nagano in our 10 day driving trip to Central Japan. We arrived at Hotel Dormy Inn Matsumoto late in the afternoon after a 4 hour drive from Nagoya Airport.

I choose Dormy Inn as it has a good reputation operating a chain of hotels in Japan catering to travelers who want a homely place to stay with basic amenities, no frills and inexpensive rates. I must say that it fulfilled these requirements more than adequately.

Although the rates are relatively inexpensive you get most of what is required for a comfortable stay. We paid $110 for a twin room and ¥800 for overnight parking. This is inclusive of full buffet breakfast with Japanese and Western spreads.

Location is excellent – 8 minute walk to the train station (where most restaurants and shops are located) and 10 minutes to Matsumoto castle.

The room comes with free Wi-Fi, a good size worktable and flat screen TV (but only Japanese programs, CNN in Japanese too). There is even an indoor and outdoor onsen (hot spring bath). A 20 minute immersion really loosened those stiff muscles after the long drive and a 6 hour flight from Singapore.

We came back late after a night visit to castle and were treated to complimentary soba noodles served piping hot. Great comfort food in a cold winter night. What a thoughtful service by Dormy’s management. I understand this is a standard service at all Dormy Inns.

The English speaking staff were all very helpful and pleasant. Although we only stayed a night it more than exceeded our expectations.
